Android 4.2.1 for Samsung Galaxy R via Cyanogenmod10.1

Samsung released Galaxy R way behind in 2011. Previously it was running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread later it was upgraded to Android 4.0 ICS. The device is similar to Galaxy S2 in many aspects, moreover it was cheaper than S2. But due to some hardware problems Samsung stopped its manufaturing.

Samsung stopped its manufacturing that doesn’t mean its Android development is over. Developers are still working hard to provide some latest ROMs based on Jelly Bean for Galaxy R. As there is no hopes that Samsung will announce Jelly Bean update for it, you should go for custom ROMs.

Cyanogenmod 10.1 cutom ROM which is based on Android 4.2.1 has been compiled for Samsung Galaxy R. Cyanogenmod are always known for their stability. You can expect this is stable one. Features from Android 4.2.1 are present in this build along typicalCyanogenmod features.

Few things which are not working properly:
USB Mass Storage only works manually.
Stock sound recorder app.
Bluetooth A2DP.
Bluetooth tethering.

Disclaimer: Procedure mentioned in the article written ahead is considered as risky and can cause permanent damage to your device. This tutorial is strictly meant for Samsung Galaxy R with model number I9103. Application of these steps to any other device or model might cause permanent damage to it.

Pre-requisites:
Before execution of process, charge mobile at least up to 70% so that installation will proceed without any interruption due to low battery.
It is better to take a backup of all your important stuff like SMS, MMS, APN, contacts etc. as they gets vanished during installation.
Most important thing, you must have custom recovery like Clockworkmod recovery or TWRP recovery installed on your phone. Without this tool you cannot flash custom ROMs.

Procedure to install Cyanogenmod 10.1 on Samsung Galaxy R I9103:


First of all download Cyanogenmod 10.1 custom ROM for Samsung Galaxy R from official development page.
Click here to download.
Also download Gapps package which contains Google apps like Gmail, Gtalk, Play store, maps etc. for Jelly Bean.
Click here to download.
After downloading these files connect mobile to computer via USB cable and enable USB debugging on. Copy both downloaded files to the external memory and don’t extract them.
Disconnect phone from PC and boot it into recovery mode. For that, switch off the mobile and then press volume up + power button + home button simultaneously until recovery mode opens.
First take a nandroid backup which might be required in future if anything goes wrong. To do so select backup & restore option and then backup. This nandroid backup is saved in the external memory.
Now wipe all the data on phone memory along with caches on it. To execute this step select wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partitions respectively.
Next flash the Cyanogenmod 10.1. For that select install zip from sdcard followed bychoose zip from sdcard. You will get a list of files from that chose Cyanogenmod 10.1 .zip file. Confirm it y selecting yes in next step.
This will take few minutes for installation. In the end you will land in recovery menu again.
Repeat the above step of install zip from sdcard and then choose zip from sdcard. But this time chose Gapps file. (Since Google apps are not present in custom ROM, you need to flash them separately.)
After successful flashing of both the files select +++++go back+++++ option and thenreboot system now.

Tip: In any case if you want to revert to previous ROM or firmware then it is possible to do so only if you have nandroid backup. In that case boot mobile into recovery mode, select backup & restore option and chose latest backup to restore.
